The 80th Anniversary of Harleston Aircraft Crashes is being held at the War Memorial on Broad Street in Harleston on Wednesday 9th March 2022 at 11am.
This is the 80th Anniversary of a tragic day in Harleston’s history when on the 9th March 1942 during the middle of WW2 there were two separate aircraft crashes on the same day which resulted in the loss of 7 aircrew.
There was the Wellington Bomber from 9 Squadron RAF Honnington that crashed near Briar Farm/Jays Green and the RAF Hawker Hurricane that crashed near Redenhall/Starston.
There will be representatives from the RAF present and the 9 Squadron RAF Standard. There is also a son of a WW2 Bomber pilot as well as representatives from the Town Council, Flixton Aviation Museum and Lowestoft Aviation Society who were involved in the excavation project in the mid 1980s.
