The town council entered into negotiations with South Norfolk Council in 2007/2008, in response to the threat of car parking charges being introduced. It was finally agreed that the town council would take on the cost of leasing the car parks, on behalf of the community, to enable car parking to remain free to the user.
As part of that agreement financial support to cover part of the costs is sought on an annual basis in the form of contribution requests to the surrounding parish councils and local businesses within the town.
