VE Day 80 in Harleston – Honouring the Past, Celebrating Community

On 8th May 2025, Redenhall with Harleston Town Council with the Harleston & District Branch of the Royal British Legion joined the nation in commemorating VE Day 80, marking eight decades since the end of World War II in Europe. Through a series of meaningful events, we honoured the sacrifices of the past while bringing our community together in remembrance and celebration.

A Day of Reflection and Tribute

Raising of the VE Day 80 Flag and Proclamation

The day began with an Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial, where residents gathered to pay tribute to those who served and sacrificed. The VE Day 80 commemorative flag was raised and the Town Crier delivered the official VE Day 80 proclamation, setting the tone for a day of reflection.

Local dignitaries, veterans, and community representatives laid wreaths at the War Memorial, ensuring that the legacy of those who fought for freedom was honored with dignity and respect.

Celebrations in the Market Place

The community came together at the Market Place for a relaxed morning gathering. The sun was shining as we spent time meeting old friends and new acquaintances whilst enjoying a cup cake – or two! The Royal British Legion curated a captivating display of historical artifacts from the era, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.

The Town Crier once again took center stage in the Market Place, delivering the proclamation to a crowd of residents, marking the official recognition of this historic anniversary.

Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial

We gathered once more at the War Memorial for a solemn tribute, laying 24 individual crosses in honor of the men of Harleston, Wortwell, and Redenhall who lost their lives during World War II. As the nation united in remembrance, Harleston joined in, with John Graham, Chair of the Harleston & District Branch of the Royal British Legion, delivering the Tribute.

Our focus then turned to the symbolic lighting of the VE Day lamp at 9:30 PM, a moment of reflection and unity. This was followed by a moving rendition of I Vow to Thee, My Country, led by the Harleston Choral Society, creating a deeply poignant and memorable conclusion to the day.
