There are lots of fun packed activities planned in Harleston to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
In and around Town there will be Jubilee themed window displays, a scavenger hunt (entry forms from Sue Read Shoes and The Swan) and a photographic exhibition “Shopping in Harleston – 1950’s to the Present Day” in the Swan Carvery.
Look out for the 70 Jubilee painted rocks hidden around town – keep them or hide them again for someone else to find. A special commemorative Jubilee publication has been produced for this momentous occasion, full of interesting facts and figures covering Queen Elizabeth’s reign.
On Thursday 2nd June at 2.00pm join Gordon Lascelles, for a walk around Harleston and find out “Whatever happened to Saffron’s and other shops?”. The walk will start and finish at The Swan Hotel.
On Thursday evening 2nd June at 6.00pm there will be a Jubilee celebration in St John’s church.
Saturday 4th June will start with the “Parade of Flags” (9.30 am on the Market Place). All of the organisations in Town, including local schools, will gather with as many flags as possible, before making their way to the Recreation Ground to launch the “Party in the Park”.
The opening ceremony will take place at 10.00 am by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant Philippa Taylor, and there will be a variety of activities including James D Partytime, “Bubblemania” and a children’s art display in the Leisure centre’s social room, the children’s games start from 2pm. There will be displays reflecting the Queen’s 70-year reign, together with an eclectic mix of craft and other stalls, a tea tent (tea, coffee and homemade cakes), licensed bars, an ice cream van and a variety street food on offer.
From 4pm there will be live music with the line-up including Humpty Dos, Aimee Heloise, The Natural Curve ft Emily George, Close Control and the Go 2’s.
On Sunday 5th June the “Picnic in the Park” is from 12.00 noon till 8.00pm on the Recreation Ground. Bring your own chairs/picnic blankets and picnics, relax and enjoy the live entertainment, including Village Voices, Lee Vasey, Sam Norfolk and Miss Kitty Collins. Look out for the “Mad Hatter’s Tea Party”, courtesy of Harleston Youth Players. There will a tea tent (tea, coffee and homemade cakes), ice cream van, Treat Trailer and a licensed bar.
We want everyone to enjoy themselves on the Recreation Ground and make maximum use of the space, so both events will be “No Parking Events”. Please park in one of the Town’s nearby free car parks and stroll along to the event.
