These changes are being delivered by Norfolk County Council. The works to Broad Street are progressing as planned. The contractors have installed safety barriers and traffic continues to flow as normal. These changes are designed to provide additional parking through the introduction of diagonal ‘chevron’ parking and create a reduced width crossing area near St Johns Church.
You may have noticed that the dropped kerb outside St John’s the Baptist Church did not align with the gate. The issue has been investigated and the ‘dropped’ area of the access will be extended to provide more room for vehicles to exit onto the carriageway.
We have requested a review of the signage on London Road which states that the road will be closed for 22 weeks as this gives the impression that the town is closed.
Next Steps – We have been informed that the works planned for the week beginning 1 August are:
- Completion of all works along Broad Street, consisting of widening the footpath outside St Johns Church, buildout of a new crossing point, and road markings for the chevron bays
- Start of works between Magpie Court and Church Street, to include installation of traffic management, trial hole works, removal of paving and kerbs, and installation of temporary pedestrian accesses
- Road closure along London Road, south of Church Street with a signed diversion route to include A143 for northbound traffic. The junction of Church Street and The Thoroughfare will remain open, as will access along The Thoroughfare from Church Street during the works. Southbound, through traffic, is to use the signed diversion route along A143 to access London Road.
Parking Provisions – Unfortunately we still await plans to clearly show the positions both before and after the changes which we will publish when received.
Bus Routes – We have been in contact with bus companies to request details of any changes due to the road works. We will publish details on our website when informed.
Meeting Local Business Owners – Disappointingly, we still await clarification of the dates for the project manager visits to local businesses to discuss individual requirements during the works. This is extremely urgent as works are planned to begin on London Road next week.
Councillors – Norfolk County Councillor, Martin Wilby will be presenting and answering questions at the next Business Forum meeting on Wednesday 3 August.
Questions – All public correspondence should be addressed to: enquiries@harleston-tc.gov.uk. We will answer those questions where we have the relevant information. We have been advised to forward questions which we are unable to answer to the project team, who commit to a response within 10 days.

Two Projects – One Town
It is very important to not confuse the Town Centre Project with the Neighbourhood Plan. We are using colour branding to distinguish the two project and messages. Environmental Green is for the Neighbourhood Plan and Purple for the Town Centre Project.
A Neighbourhood Plan is a planning policy document written by the community to guide future development in the area. It will be put to referendum of the electorate on 22 September. Should the community vote in favour of the plan, we would have greater control over developments in our parish and receive a greater share of the money from developers.
