We’re thrilled to report that the flags are flying in Harleston once more. after many months of investigation, testing and careful planning.
As you know, the flag brackets fixed to many buildings in the town centre were taken out of use due to safety concerns. Many of the buildings they are attached to are very old, and in some case Listed, meaning there was a genuine risk of brackets coming loose if holding much weight.
We understand how disappointing it has been to see the brackets empty, and we’d like to thank you for your patience and understanding, while this important work was carried out.
Earlier this year, the Town Council engaged with a local specialist engineer to review each bracket, and carry out safety tests reporting on the fixings and load bearing capacity. Following his extensive report, a plan to bring suitable brackets back in use was developed, and following final risk assessments we were very pleased to ensure that around half of the brackets are safe enough to use.
We’re extremely proud to be working with Flag Force and Harleston’s Future to make sure the flags are flying proudly to commemorate Armed Forces Week, in recognition of those who serve, and have served our country.
Going forward we will continue to work with Flag Force to perform annual inspections and testing to ensure the brackets continue to stay safe, while removing any that present concerns in the future. So that we can continue to use as many brackets as possible.
Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who made this possible. Please join us in recognising the hard work of the Council’s Amenities & Facilities Committee – Councillors Mba, Graham and West – together with the Deputy Clerk and Operations Officer, and the fantastic teams at Flag Force and Harleston’s Future. Their expertise, commitment and collaborative approach have been instrumental in bringing the flags back to our town centre, and we are incredibly grateful for their support.
